Artigo Pico ITX Windows Install
After my Ubuntu test install (really just checking to see if I built the thing right), I went ahead and installed Windows XP. While the install was a bit slow, it worked without a hitch.
After installing XP Pro, I loaded the drivers for my Hawking HWUG1 USB wireless stick, plugged the stick in, and in a few minutes I was happily surfing the web wirelessly. I downloaded XP SP3 and rebooted.
I was finally prompted with a "Found new hardware" alert for the built in audio on the motherboard. I went to the Via Pico ITX support page to download the drivers. Unfortunately, they are compressed as RAR files. Why Via does this I have no idea. Can't they just use zip? Stupid. Anyway, I don't feel like downloading WinRAR right now, so I'll have to continue this post later.
Update:
Instead of installing WinRAR and updating the drivers, I re-ran windows update instead. Several updates showed up (Internet Explorer 7, etc.), but windows update was unable to complete the installation. Maybe there is a bug with installing SP XP3 before IE7? Anyway, I used system restore to back-track to my pre-SP3 configuration. Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem either, so I tried reinstalling Windows from scratch again, but it got stuck on "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...".
I tried using PartedMagic, Partition Magic, BartPE, etc. to get past the error, but none of them would let me get to a point where I could make any changes to my hard drive. I finally had to reinstall Ubuntu completely, then start the windows install again. That worked.
Finally, I ran all windows updates except SP3 first (took hours), then installed SP3 last. So far so good.
