USB-SATA Bridge problem

Just bought a new Buffalo MiniStation 250 GB USB drive. It worked like a charm on my laptop, but on my desktop machine I could not get it to show up. Instead, the add hardware wizard kept popping up asking to install "BUFFALO INC. USB-SATA Bridge". I tried all the usual suspects, windows update, searching the install CD, searching www.buffalotech.com for any kernels of knowledgebase, etc. But no help for the specific problem.

I finally found something mentioning usbstore.inf and usbstore.pnf as the files where all the USB storage stuff is kept (found in C:/Windows/INF). I looked in my Windows/INF folder and guess what, the files were missing on my desktop, but present on my laptop. Not sure how or when that happened, but it seemed to be the cause of the problem. I was running Windows XP Pro on both machines, so I just copied the files over from my laptop and put them in Windows/INF, and viola, my buffalo mounted next time I plugged it in.

I have the same problem with Vista 64-bit Ultimate. I did exactly what you did only i downloaded those two files from online (which shouldn't make a bit of difference). Now instead of calling it "Buffalo Inc. USB-SATA Bridge" in "Device manager" it shows up as "SAMSUNG HD501LJ USB Device". WTF? it isn't made by SAMSUNG?!?! how the hell... I have no idea what to do now because i'm now back at square one in the my troubleshooting logic: Identify the problem. I don't even know what the problem is anymore!!!! I have XP 64 bit on a different drive on this same computer so i know that it is definately NOT any kind of hardware issue because i've never had any issues with the drive on that OS. I know the drive works just fine. It shows up in device manager ( but only as an unknown device" and I absolutely have tried everything I know how about troubleshooting hardware problems. It's sunday so Microsoft support is not available till tomorrow. :(
Everything about vista has been just fine until this bug popped up. THIS IS SO ANNOYING!!!
